Tips and Steps for Using Internal and External Threaded Tools

Thread cutting is the process of cutting a threaded spiral ring from a tapped size hole or bolt to form a threaded connection.

A complete threaded connection requires a female thread and a matching male thread as a mate. Manual thread cutting is a necessary working technique because - for technical and economic reasons - the machine cannot be used in all cases.

GSR introduces you to female and male threaded tools and the basic operation of cutting.

Tools for internal threads

Internal threads are cut by serial taps or nut taps. Serial taps consist of two or three tools, the difference being in the design of the cutting section.

The entry tap has a long chamfer and a trapezoidal cutting edge; it does about 60 % of the cutting work.

The rotary tap has a shorter chamfer and a deeper trapezoidal cutting edge; it does about 30 % of the cutting.

The third tap has a short chamfer and a cutting edge that creates the final sharp shape of the thread groove; it cuts the thread to the nominal size and completes the thread flank.

Process flow

In principle, the following steps are required to cut threads into blind and through holes.

Holding/clamping

Workpieces that must be bolted to each other must be clamped together and drilled and countersunk together to keep the holes aligned.

Scribing/spotting

These operations are performed as described in "Drilling and Countersinking/Countersinking"; it can also be done prior to clamping.

Drilling

As the thread tap removes the material from the hole, the hole is drilled to a small diameter, depending on the nominal diameter of the thread.

External threaded tools

External threads are made with the help of a threading die or die holder. The threading die consists of a cutting body with a chamfer on both sides, so that it can be applied in both directions.

The die stock consists of a holder equipped with a handle in which two threading dies are placed. One of them is fixed and the other can be moved by means of a locking screw through a pressure piece. Three to five pairs of interchangeable threaded dies for various sizes of threads belong to the die stock.

Process flow

In principle, manual cutting of external threads requires the following operations.

Clamping

The bolt (round stock) is clamped vertically between the vises - jaws, attachments or clamping jaws for the round stock; in this way, only the part of the material to be worked should protrude into the clamping device in order to reduce the elasticity of the bolt.

Cleaning

After thread cutting, remove swarf and remaining oil from the thread sides by means of compressed air or a brush.

Inspection

The thread length is checked with a vernier caliper and the thread fit accuracy is checked with a thread ring gauge according to the nominal diameter.
