Thread rolling in HSS tap production

Thread rolling is a cold-forming process that uses two thread rolling wheels to deform the workpiece material into a threaded profile.

It usually applies to the manufacturing of nuts, self-tapping screws, and other fasteners. In the production of HSS taps, the thread rolling process is also frequently applied,

especially for big sizes over M14.

The thread rolling process on the tap production involves the following major steps:

1. Workpiece preparation: A cylindrical tap blank, is prepared for thread rolling by ensuring it has the correct thread diameter and length.

2. Cold Forming: The tap blank is placed in a thread rolling machine and fed between two wheels, one of which is fixed and the other rotating.

The rotating wheel exerts pressure on the blank to deform it and form the shape of the thread profile.

3. Finishing operations: After thread rolling, it needs to do the tool setting on the lathe to grind the threads precisely to get the required dimension.

Why we do it like this:

Reason 1: if the threads are fully grinded, the high grinding volume is going to make high temperature which might affect the quality of threads, and also the scorch marks are obvious.

Reason 2: The threads need to be precisely grinded three times after thread rolling but four to five times for fully grinding, it is a much more productive way for factories.

Reason 3: The rolling process creates compressive stresses in the threaded area, which increases the strength of the threads. It has higher hardness after heat-treatment, which makes

the threads durable and long working life.

The application of thread rolling in tap production plays a role in improving the quality of tap threads, Even now that we're using multi-line grinders instead of single line grinder,

we still do the thread rolling before grinding. We insist that precision is in details, You'll feel the difference when you use our products!
